Accounting Tips

  • Check fraud is a reality, so make sure that you keep your company's checkbooks in a secure location. Create monetary limits for checks, set-up a special account for paychecks and keep all other checks made out to business and not individuals.
  • Making sure to keep up-to-date records of all of your financial activities is important. This includes, paying bills, payroll, expenses, and profits. This information is required in order to properly file taxes and can cut accounting costs at tax time.
  • Checking all your billing statements should be routine. Often times spotting extra, hidden or incorrect charges soon after they happen may help resolve issues that cost you extra money for nothing.

About The Arcadian Group CPA

Hope Player started her own CPA firm in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1987, and very quickly learned things were a lot different signing the front of the check, rather than the back. She promotes small business by helping start-up companies, and speaking at national, state, and local meetings on various topics relating to entrepreneurship. Hope is currently the Managing Member of The Arcadian Group, LLC, a CPA firm in New Jersey which provides accounting, consulting and tax services to businesses, individuals, and nonprofit organizations.

An avid supporter of small business issues, Hope is a co-founder and former chair of the board of directors of the New Century Venture Center, a small business incubator in Roanoke, Virginia. The National Business Incubation Association recognized the organization in April 2004 as the Randall M. Whaley Incubator of the Year, the most prestigious award presented by the organization. Hope was recognized for her work with The New Century Venture Center by Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants for Outstanding Public Service and by the Small Business Administration as Virginia's Outstanding Accountant Advocate.

She lives in New Jersey with her husband, Jim Pappas, their calico cat, Angel Josephine (AJ) and an Australian Shepherd mix dog, Bernie. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, she is active in the National Business Incubation Association, New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, International Women's Writing Guild, and the Porsche Club.
